Get the book and get stuck in. You need to know them, and not just for the test.
The options are;
Buy the best you can afford. Can you think of something more important to spend money on? (Except training of course!)
Do you want to hire a bike and do your training before you buy? Or wait and do your training on your own bike?
Training will help safeguard all your other investments.
Read magazines, haunt bike shops, torment dealers with questions. Now is the time to haggle a deal for a good helmet and clothing. Some bikes are cheap to run, some very expensive. Check prices on tyres and servicing, etc. Reliability, insurance and ease of use are the most important qualities for your first bike. You can always buy something bigger or faster with a few miles under your belt.
